Coastal Grandmother & GrandMillennial Trends, Grandparent Scams, Never Forget Sept 11th and Family Emergency Plans

September has a lot to celebrate so we kick off September Healthy Aging Month with two celebrations happening on September 11.

The first is the commemoration of those lost during the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. As a passionate supporter of the first responders of September 11 – Sherri recognizes this day as one “We Will Never Forget” with her thoughts on how her grandparents lived through Pearl Harbor and promised never to forget that tragedy and for her generation 9/11 is our day of remembrance. One recent study Sherri wrote about shows 9/11 first responders, now in their 50s and 60s, who breathed in the toxic debris at Ground Zero and experienced the trauma of collecting human remains, now show brain scans that resemble people in their 80s and 90s and Alzheimer’s. Here a link to Sherri’s article.

The second celebration is National Grandparents Day on September 11. As our special guest, Sherri talks to financial elder abuse expert, Liz Loewy, co-founder of Eversafe. Liz explains how Grandparent Scams work and how to protect your older loved one from these fraudulent schemes that results in billions of dollars in lost savings every year and how Eversafe can help.

Caregiver Wellness News

Sherri discusses the statistics around grandparents becoming the parent to grandchildren – called “grandfamilies” as well as youths under age 18 caring full-time for aging grandparents. She also shares great resources for grandparent care such as an innovative transportation service called GoGoGrandparent.

Well Home Design News

For our Well Home Design News, Sherri picks up the National Grandparents Day theme and talks about two fashion and home design trends that bridge older and younger generations: Coastal Grandmother and Grandmillennial style.

Just channel Diane Keaton in “Something’s Gotta Give”: J. Crew canvas bucket hat, Wooden Ships “beach” sweater, J. Crew linen tan pants, Jack Rogers cork sandals, Lafco candle in “Beach House: Sand &
Dune;” J Crew tissue weight turtleneck sweater, Bobbi Brown “Beach” scent, Alpine featherweight cashmere scarf in “ice” blue color

The Grandmillennial design style is all about treasures from granny’s attic with a modern flair. Think chintz, floral and fauna, tapestry and fringe, blue and white chinoiserie everything including wallpaper, privacy screens and lamps, gilded mirrors, silver ice buckets repurposed as flower holders, cane and rattan furniture that you upcycle.

Sherri’s Mom’s Coastal Cottage Bathroom

Sherri’s mom is an interior designer expert and chose Coastal Cottage style for her recent bathroom remodel. Notice the bench seating and grab bars in shower, roll-under seating for vanity, contrasting cabinets and counters, amazing natural lighting through windows and a skylight as well as wooden chandelier and recessed ceiling lights, lever handles for vanity sinks and shower – well done Mom on opting for great universal design! (note: bathtub is a safety hazard as we age but Mom kept hers for “decorative purposes only – I have not taken a bath in years but the space looked empty without a tub!”)

Free Public Service Webinar

As a public service to our “Caregiving Club On Air” podcast listeners we offer this free 1-hour webinar from corporate gerontologist, Sherri Snelling, for September National Emergency Preparedness Month. Sherri takes you through what to know about disaster protocols for older loved ones living at home or in a senior living community. She also provides tips, checklists and resources on how to be better prepared as a family, how to have the conversation with older loved ones and where to go to get more information.
