Our July episode of “Caregiving Club On Air” has host and gerontologist, Sherri Snelling, celebrating the upcoming Paris Olympics with a very special guest interview. As Sherri mentions in the podcast, she was searching for a caregiving story with an Olympic tie-in and found Adam Pearce, co-founder with his brother, Kevin, of LoveYourBrain.com. Kevin, an Olympic snowboarder suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) right before the 2010 Olympics in Park City, Utah and Adam stepped in as his caregiver to help him recover while they both found resiliency through their experiences. This is an inspirational caregiving story you will not want to miss. You can also watch the HBO documentary on Adam and Kevin “Crash Reel.”

Also, we encourage you to sign up for the LoveYourBrain newsletter so you can be alerted to all the upcoming learning sessions, especially the Caregiver Retreats. Seeee Adam’s special message to family caregivers:

Caregiver Wellness News

For Caregiver Wellness News, Sherri recognizes July Sandwich Generation Month. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, more than 1/4 of all caregivers are caring for both children and older parents at the same time – the classic Sandwich Generation. University of Michigan research showed the increase in financial strain as well as mental health strain on the Sandwich Generation. On the podcast, Sherri talks about the importance of families having the conversation about long-term care to help plan ahead for the financial challenges. Sherri also talks about how to harness your four “feel-good” happiness hormones for all caregivers to highlight International Self-Care Day on July 24. (Fun fact: International Self-Care Day is held every year on July 24 to highlight the “24/7” aspect of self-care practices – not letting a day go by without a little Me Time.) The research and tips are all from Sherri’s book,“Me Time Monday – The Weekly Wellness Plan to Find Balance and Joy for a Busy Life”.

Well Home Design News

In the Well Home Design News Sherri celebrates National Forest Week (July 8-14) with some research from her book on forest bathing for healing and health and then translating that information into Well Home Design. She does this by offering how to bring the forest inside using your 5 senses as a design guide:

SIGHT

SMELL

Bring in forest smells through candles and diffusers, room sprays and closet or storage cedar smells that are great to keeping wool safe all year. Pine scents are great for invigorating and when paired with lavender also soothing and calming.

TASTE

TOUCH

SOUND

Below I offer my playlist for you of “forest inspired” music and sounds starting with a cedar-designed sleep machine that plays pink noise – the sounds of nature, including the forest, that studies show gets you to sleep faster and helps you stay asleep longer. Cllick on the album covers to play our forest playlist.

Meditative

Japanese-inspired meditative music “The Huge Tree in Tsukimori Forest” by master composer, Joe Hisaishi

Me Time Monday Wellness Hack

At the end of this episode is our Me Time Monday Wellness Hack from Sherri’s new book, Me Time Monday – The Weekly Wellness Plan to Find Balance and Joy for a Busy Life. We explore the science of forest bathing – how it helps us heal, improves health (such as better sleep) and boosts our happiness. At the end of the hack we also offer a 1-minute forest bathing experience (also below) all to celebrate how nature plays a key role in our health and happiness and in celebration of National Forest Week.
