For caregivers, taking a vacation seems like an unrealistic or futuristic dream. How can you leave your loved one? Who will care for them? How can you overcome the guilt of finding relief and fun on a vacation while you are worrying about your loved one? Is it possible to bring them with you?

These and many more questions are what caregivers face when contemplating a summer getaway.

Thankfully there are resources and strategies to make a trip possible so that caregivers can get a break – whether it is finding respite care while you are away or whether it is finding ways to bring your loved one along for the ride/flight/cruise.

Our CEO, Sherri Snelling, wrote an entire chapter in her book, A Cast of Caregivers – Celebrity Stories to Help You Prepare to Care, about caregiver vacations (or staycations) called “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”

In addition, one of her celebrity stories from the book highlighted Sylvia Mackey, wife to NFL star John Mackey. Sylvia explains how she planned to travel with her husband, who had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, so that he could still enjoy the Super Bowl signing events that made him happy. Read an excerpt from Sherri’s book on Sylvia’s travel strategy.
