Welcome to our June episode of “Caregiving Club On Air” podcast (S6, Ep 71). In this episode we highlight the 8th Annual National Day of Joy on June 24 including new survey results of caregivers and older adults in my interview with Joni Magnus-Ramsey of Comfort Keepers.

On this episode Sherri talks to Joni about the 2026 National Day of Joy survey of more than 2,000 family caregivers and older adults:

  • 92% of respondents say caregiving brings both joy and emotional strain – how do you find the balance and silver linings in caregiving?
  • What types of activities bring caregivers joy as opposed to their older loved ones – what joy do they seek?
  • As a caregiver, how do you ask for and accept help without feeling guilty?
  • If your older loved one does not to bring help into the home, how do you help them to see it is not just them – you need help too

More than 100 Comfort Keepers offices will be celebrating #NationalDayofJoy on June 24 with special activities to help lift the human spirit of their clients. Join in on the celebration!

Things to know about “aging in place” and home care:

AARP has surveyed older Americans on where they want to live as they age and the response (depending on age range) is 79 – 89% say “remain in my home as independently and safely as long as I can.” (Within the long-term care industry this is known as “aging in place.”)

Both the independence and safety factors will require help as older adults get into their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. Right now in the U.S.:

76 million over age 65 live at home – yet most has trouble with at least 1 main living feature in their home (e.g., stairs, showers, etc.)Pew Research Center

There are about 22 million Solo Agers (those over 60 who live alone) Mather Institute

About 43% of women over age 75 live alone. U.S. Census

This is why home care agencies are lifelines for families and especially the family caregiver who needs help caring for older loved ones.

  • You can get companionship, meal prep, light housekeeping, help bathing, dressing with professional caregivers
  • Some professional caregivers can even drive your loved one and accompany them to doctor appointments, pharmacy pick-up and grocery store outings (as well as some personal activities like getting to a birthday party!)
  • Home care also helps the family caregiver by giving them a respite break and having someone they can turn to in emotionally tough times or to have someone who can provide insights into caregiving issues with a loved one
  • Some home care agencies offer specialized dementia care services in the home – this can cost more because the professional caregivers are specially trained to manage the behaviors and challenges with this difficult disease
